Over the last couple of years I've been hearing more and more about Alagna in Italy as a spot for some of the best off-piste in the Alps, but none of it has been very 'objective'.
I was thinking of planning a trip out there and was wondering if anyone has been out or knows someone who has...any info would be greatly appreciated!

Posted Tue, 01/10/2012 - 18:15We skied in Alagna a few years back on the basis that its supposed to be a freeride mecca. It was good but the snow wasn't amazing when we were there plus the big main freeride lift was out of action. Rumour had it that they were going to build a new gondola / cable car going miles up into the backcountry (with Monte Rosa in behind) so that it was a La Grave stylee "get out the lift and you're on your own" kinda place. I've never heard whether they got round to building it yet but the terrain up the back there is amazing so in good snow it would defo be a cool place to ski. The whole Aosta valley has pretty good skiing and you can get an Aosta valley pass (covering Courmayeur, La Thuile, Pila, Alagna, La Rosiere, Champoluc, Gressoney (maybe others I've forgotten about) - we've thought of doing a season with that pass before as on a good snow year you'd get some great skiing in with Chamonix etc just through the tunnel.

Val Sesia is supposed to be a bit of a mecca for white water kayaking as well so sounds like a pretty cool part of the alps all in all! I skied over to Cervinia (also in Aosta valley) from Zermatt a few years ago and to be honest wasn't that impressed...

Posted Mon, 01/16/2012 - 14:00Worth noting that you don't access Alagna from the Aosta valley - I fell into that trap when we went there for a day trip and found out the hard way that its actually a pretty long drive to go to from Courmayeur... I think we had to almost drive to Milan and then all the way up the valley. We found out afterwards that you can get into it from Gressoney which would have been way closer! We had a good ski there but it wasn't great conditions or weather and the long drive probably soured it a bit for me! I should probaby go back at some point as it sounds like it is a cool place (which is why we wanted to have a ski there in the first place!)
