My sis is living in Vancouver at the mo' so I'm planning a trip out to BC later in the season. I'm going to be able to borrow her car and head off skiing somewhere for a week but not sure where to go for. I've skied at Whistler before but keen to try somewhere new... which resort would peeps recommend?
Re: Best ski resort in BC?
Posted Wed, 01/11/2012 - 23:22Its been a pish poor winter over here so far. I live in Golden and have had season pass at Kicking Horse for the last 5 years. Last season was epic and this season has half the snow we had this time last year. Best Resort closest to Van is Mt Baker in the USA (Washington). Gets record snow most years. If you head east from Van, which you have to otherwise you'll be driving along the bottom of the ocean, the first not bad resort is Silver Star in Vernon. Further east sill, you have Kicking Horse which is good with massive backcountry, and Revelstoke which is ok with great glades. They are 7 hours from Van C and 1.5 hours apart. In the Kootenays you have Red Mountain, Whitewater and Fernie which are all good but are all having a horrible snow year. Prey for snow and for avi conditions to stabilise!!

Posted Thu, 01/12/2012 - 09:28hmm, hadn't thought of Mt Baker at all - that might be a good call and sounds like its pretty close. I'm not going out till March so hopefully the snowpack might improve by then... would love to get across to Kicking Horse and Revelstoke as I've heard good things but its obviously a big drive - i'm guessing the roads are affected by snow as well if its dumping across there? Anyways cheers for the suggestions - plenty of food for thought!

Posted Fri, 01/13/2012 - 17:22My vote goes to Fernie! I've been there 3 times for hols since doing a couple of seasons there years ago and it pretty much rocks. Way better vibe than Whistler for me and I love the terrain especially when you start exploring out wide. The others mentioned are great too - haven't skied all of them but Kicking Horse has great terrain (think they might have opened up another bowl or even two since i was there?) and places like Whitewater are super cool with few lifts but great skiing.
Re: Best ski resort in BC?
Posted Fri, 01/13/2012 - 17:28What about places like Lake Louise & Banff/Sunshine or is that all into Alberta? I had a good week in Lake louise but got the impression it may not be where the real rippers hang out? My vote goes to the place where the best snow is anyway!
Re: Best ski resort in BC?
Posted Fri, 01/13/2012 - 18:23Not skied anywhere other than Grouse Mountain (North Vancouver) - not bad for a city resort but not a patch on what the rest of BC has to offer. It was all the time I had. Want to go back though. Anyway, a mate lives in Nelson she says - "Theres lots of snow at Whitewater but nothing fresh for 3 days. Cold (-10 in town this morning) and more snow in the forecast. . Went over to Idaho last week to Silver Mountain which was fun. Hill was very icy so reminded me of scotland!!"
Re: Best ski resort in BC?
Posted Sat, 01/14/2012 - 10:45Thanks for all the suggestions guys! Looking forwards to the trip... sounds like I could do with adding an extra week and turning it into a roadtrip. Fingers crossed the snow improves out there - sounds like Europe's getting all the snow this year at the moment! I've got vague memories of someone mentioning a call resort way up North from Whistler as well - anyone know more about that one?
Re: Best ski resort in BC?
Posted Sat, 01/14/2012 - 10:55Can't let this go without pointing you towards our Canadian Resort Guide - Team SkiMountain did a trip round a load of the resorts a couple of years back and we put the guide together then. It was an awsome trip with loads of good skiing at all the resorts listed (they're pretty much all great). We missed a few out - including the one North of Whistler you mention Dave - so we'll just have to go back sometime soon! If you're into touring there is unlimited potential as well - specially if you head towards places like Rogers Pass which rocks! As @snowfox mentioned there are also a few smaller resorts right next to Vancouver - Grouse, Cypress, and Seymore Mountains - they're all worth a visit especially if the snows good but definitely worth going further a field to the bigger resorts if you get the chance.
Re: Best ski resort in BC?
Posted Sat, 01/14/2012 - 18:43Nice Post Kenny!! I believe the ski mountain "Team" stayed at the hotel Kennedy for a few days during your Canada mission!! I'm waiting for your review of the Asulkan Hut and associated skiing. Epic Times!! In response to the posts above, i spent 3 seasons straight in Fernie between 2003 and 2006, skiing over 300 days, and have been based at Kicking Horse Resort in Golden BC for the past 5 seasons. My favourite between Fernie and Kicking Horse? Well, here are the pros and cons..
Fernie: Pros-Epic dumps of powder, great inbounds terrain especially when you get to know where to go after a storm, amazing tree skiing, huge backcountry, never very busy other than on holidays, very fun party town, town close to resort
Cons-Tendancy to rain to top at least once a year, storms can come in wet and heavy, often warms at end of storm turning powder to porridge, terrain can be closed for days after storms due to warming and unstability, if it rains then freezes-stay at home, Lizard Bowl Headwall (the main bowl headwall) has the best lines in BC but can only be ski'd after 4.30 when ski patrol has gone home. Don't get caught out!!
Kicking Horse: Pros-Steepest terrain in BC, lightest powder in BC, massive easily accessed backcountry with everything from Alaskan style spines to huge wind lips and open bowls, can get powder weeks after storm if you know where to go
Cons- Can go for long periods between storms where hill becomes not fun at all due to style of terrain, powder filled chutes can turn into mogul and rock filled nightmares, tree skiing needs extensive glading work as many open tree'd area's close out into dense bush, lift system is poorly arranged putting huge pressure on main gondola and causing massive line ups on holidays and after storms, backcountry is so easy to access you often get people in dangerous avi terrain with no gear making it very dangerous for everyone, Golden is 13km from ski hill and after the ski hill closes at 4.30 the resort is dead, Golden is nowhere near as good as Fernie for bars and parties.
To sum up, if i was going to do a season i'd go to Fernie as is a more fun town in general, but if i was going to do some serious skiing or backcountry and partying wasn't a main concern, i'd go to Kicking Horse. Its dumping today in Golden and is forecast to snow all week!!!
Re: Best ski resort in BC?
Posted Sat, 01/14/2012 - 20:11Awsome writeup @Captain Clawfoot, you're going to get some extra SkiMountain stoke awarded for that! And perhaps hotel Kennedy needs a special mention in our Canada section - couldn't have done it without you after all, cheers! I'll have to get on the case with the Asulkan write up and maybe its about time for a return trip!! specially if its about to start dumping out there - keep me informed and I'll start working on the rest of the Team!
My impressions of Fernie and Kicking Horse pretty much match what you say there so I won't add too much more about those. Some thoughts on a few of the others though:
Revelstoke: some great trees and cool steep and tight drops over the backside. Some really cool features and massive height loss. Not convinced about the town and suspect it can get pretty busy.
Whitewater: just outside Nelson I really liked the vibe here - only 2 or 3 lifts (though have they put a new one in now) but gives great access to alot of cool terrain including good trees and some great lines with a bit of a hike.
Red Mountain: despite the hype I wasn't super impressed with Red... I felt the terrain was a bit limited when compared with places like Kicking Horse, Fernie, Revelstoke etc. Having said that lots of skiers would still get alot out of Red but for cool terrain and big lines I'd look elsewhere.
Re: Best ski resort in BC?
Posted Sun, 01/15/2012 - 17:26There's Powder King and Smithers way north from Whistler - I've never been though and don't know anyone who has. I bet they rock though! They'd be a looong drive! I hitched from Whistler way up to Whitehorse years ago and its bloody miles, think it took me 3 days! BC is a BIG place!!
Re: Best ski resort in BC?
Posted Mon, 01/16/2012 - 10:17Note - I've moved the America /Europe snow debate to its own thread: Does snow alternate between America and Europe
Re: Best ski resort in BC?
Posted Thu, 01/19/2012 - 10:04interesting there isn't much love for whistler going on here - is that because other places are better or just cos it get plenty of hype on its own without us talking about it too?
Re: Best ski resort in BC?
Posted Fri, 01/20/2012 - 18:30If you enjoy massive lineups, frequent rain and heavy porridge snow, and don't mind actually fighting with thousands of pro skiers for first tracks after a storm, then Whistler is pretty good. Once you realise that there is much more to skiing in BC other than Whistler then its easy to understand why it doesn't even get a mention on this thread!! You can ski inbounds at some of the resorts mentioned above and get fresh tracks 3 or 4 days after a storm, and if you hit them on a weekday after a storm, chances are you will hardly cross a track. When you consider that these resorts also have massive backcountry that is completely accessible and totally uncrowded then Whistler doesn't even seem worth a mention.
Re: Best ski resort in BC?
Posted Fri, 01/20/2012 - 18:54Yep whistler = the chamonix of BC (well, in some respects anyway). If no-one else was there it would be awsome, but EVERYONES there so everything gets skied out. Can be a good vibe though & plenty of parties!
Re: Best ski resort in BC?
Posted Sat, 01/21/2012 - 16:29Damn, TD beat me to the whistler = cham comment. I think The Captain is being a little harsh but if you live in BC I can see why you wouldn't rate Whistler in comparison to what is on offer elsewhere. Whistler is still pretty cool, massive mountain, lots of piste and worth a visit if you're over on the west coast, just probably wouldn't want to make a season of it. They do have some nice heated bridges too for those cold walks home from the pub (or is that just a mixed-up alcohol fuelled memory of mine?!).
