I've heard it sometimes said that Europe and North America take it turn about with the snow. So a good season in Europe means a crap season in North America and vice versa. Maybe the northern hemisphere has a finite amount of snow so its impossible for them both to have it at the same time!?! I suspect this may be another ski related urban myth like the full moon one. Perhaps Captain Clawfoot can shed light.......
Re: Does snow alternate between America and Europe
Posted Mon, 01/16/2012 - 10:12Well ski monkey, i think there may be some truth in that. The main factor in the winter weather over here in Canada is the el nino/la nina weather patterns. Last year was La Nina i think, and it was unbelievably huge. This year is supposed to be whats called a double dip La Nina (ie two in a row) but its not shaping up that way. In saying that i just ski'd Kicking Horse in 2 feet of fresh this morning, and it seems like i've been shoveling my driveway quite a bit layely. Often when we get a snow storm here, i will be on the phone to my Folks in Scotland a few weeks later and they are getting hammered by winds and rain. It definately makes its way over somehow, but i'm no weather man so cant say for sure. Looks like they got pounded in the swiss alps lately as well so who knows. Maybe Soulrider knows the score?

Posted Mon, 01/16/2012 - 10:24Hmmm... this old chestnut! My take on it is that there is some link between weather systems in the alps and those in America but that its way more complicated than 'one season its great there, the next its great here'. Last season (2011) it was magic in North America and pretty dire in the Alps (unfortunately I was in the Alps and feel sick every time I hear talk of how epic it was in N America!), but then if memory serves me right I'm sure in 2009 I had great snow at different times in both BC and the French Alps. Theres one thing for sure - if it was a hard and fast predictable rule the alps would be empty one year and rammed the next!
Captain Clawfoot - Can't believe you're still saying there ain't much snow out there after skiing 2ft of fresh - man, you have been spoilt!!
