Ski Touring this April

Just beginning to think bout making plans for ski touring this April.  It's got to be somewhere in Europe.  What's the snowpack like and should we go for one of the big 'classics' like The Haute Route or are there some much better lesser known options.........haven't got round to doing the Haute Route (Cham to Zermatt) so kind of tempted but will it just be busy and not as good as the hype.

Re: Ski Touring this April

Did the Classic Haute Route starting mid April, and after Easter a few years ago and it was quiet! There's been tons of snow there this year so should be great for a late and hopefuly quiet trip.

Re: Ski Touring this April

Yep, avoid Easter and you should be fine (though last year the snow was disappearing faster than usual, this year there's been alot more snow in general - specially in the northern alps).  The classic haute route is a great route but there are plenty of lesser know and just as good ski tours in the alps... there are also plenty of ways to vary the routes to take in peaks or get away from the crowds a bit along the way.  There's a book called Alpine Ski Mountaineering by Bill o'Connor that has all the classic tours in it (there are two volumes - east & west alps I think).

Cheers guys.  Maybe this year is the year for the HR then.....Those books sound like the first port of call though.  I'll see if Amazon has then (use up those Christmas vouchers wisely).
