La Hoya

"Good advanced terrain for hardcore freeriders..."

Introduction

The La Hoya ski resort sits within the Los Alerces National Park, close to the city of Esquel in the Chubut region of Argentina.  The base station is located at 1,350m rising to 2,050m at its highest peaks.

La Hoya is a mid-sized resort (for Argentina) with around 60ha of skiable terrain but a mix of runs for all abilities.  Due to its more southerly location it is not uncommon for the resort to have snow in early June and for the season to run until October.  It often gets good powder due to the orientation of the slopes with the runs covering a wide circular basin and then all meeting at the same base point.

Facilities and Services

The resort is set up for alpine and Nordic skiing and snowboarding with runs for all levels and abilities.  There are 10 lifts giving access to 24 runs.  La Hoya also has good off-piste potential and access to pretty advanced terrain for the expert skiers or boarder.  It is more limited for freestyle though and has no halfpipe.

La Hoya Piste Map

If there is poor snowfall, La Hoya has a snow making system and a special area for randoneé skiing and a snowmobile circuit.  The only accommodation in the resort itself is a family run hotel at the base of the slopes.  Additional accommodation catering to different budgets is available in Esquel.

La Hoya is quite a family orientated resort with facilities to match e.g. day care and snow garden in addition to the usual ski hire and ski school.

Travel

La Hoya is in the northwest of Chubut, 13 km from the city of Esquel.  To get to the resort by car there are paved routes from a number of cities, Bariloche (near the resort of Cran Catedral), Trelew and Neuquen.  The Argentinian capital, Buenos Aires is around 1,800km from Esquel.

You can fly to Buenos Aires and then onto the local airport at Bariloche where a bus transfer will take you the 300km to Esquel.
