Mt Bachelor

Mt Bachelor is a weird looking mountain that seems to rise out of the middle of nowhere in Oregon state. This extinct volcano is an almost perfect cone shape and allows a bizarre panoramic 360 degree skiing experience. This place is a haven for intermediate skiers and those who like to cruise.

Because of the stand-alone nature of the mountain it can get quite windy here and this can sometimes effect the lifts. It also means that there is an incredibly quick turnaround of weather conditions: one minute it'll be puking its guts and the next minute it'll be a banger bluebird sky. Ski habits will vary in a similarly rapid fashion as one minute you'll be cowering in the shelter of the tree lined powder stash, the next minute you'll be up on top of the peak staring down the barrel of a wide open, steep as bowl of fun.

There is a magical top to bottom cover of blue on this mountain which will see those legs burning and you'll find yourself skiing those runs faster and faster every time. The most recommended runs have to be those which lead from the top of the Summit Express and go all the way down. This is about as good as trail skiing gets.

I wouldn't dissuade beginners from visiting this resort as there are a few good nursery areas and many of the blue runs are really mellow. This could be seen as the perfect place for progression and before you know what's going on you'll be skiing the whole mountain.

Lots of visitors really rate the lifts at this resort as they go really fast and they're really comfortable. Despite being the busiest resort in Oregon, it doesn't suffer from crowding issues. The park is really good and there are some really ripping snowboarders going around- I saw some really big tricks going on when I was here.

There's some really good cross country skiing on the lower slopes of this unique feeling mountain and they are really onto the grooming factor. There are some great runs at the top of the mountain for advanced skiers and if you use your imagination then you can find great terrain all the way round this mountain; you might have to go off the trail though to have the best time.

The lack of a village at the base of the hill means that many will be put off visiting this resort, which is a shame because its good. The nearby village of Bend offers some good places to stay and some great bars and restaurants, all at a much more reasonable price than most other American ski towns. If I go on a week-long holiday then I want slope side accommodation I'm afraid, but if I happened to be in Oregon and looking for fun; Mt Bachelor would be on my list of places to ski.
