Along with Mt Hutt, Porters, and Mt Olympus, Mount Cheeseman is one of the closest ski areas to Christchurch (just over 100km). Unlike some of the other Arthurs Pass club ski fields, Mt Cheeseman offers some great skiing for lower end and intermediate skiers - there is a big bowl with nice open rolling terrain. Because it faces predominantly South East, the skiing at Cheeseman tends to be sunny - although its pretty small, its a great place to learn and progress!

The lifts at Mt Cheeseman are two T-Bars which give easy access to well groomed gentle terrain with a Learners Tow being located right beside the main lodge. Most better skiers will go elsewhere in Arthurs Pass before going here, but there is actually some pretty good terrain here with a large section left un-patrolled and unpisted. Because good riders often go elsewhere, Mt Cheeseman can sometimes retain powder stashes for quite a while 'cos no-ones skiing them!

To find the skiing at Mt Cheeseman, the access road can be fairly exciting (as with many of the NZ ski area access roads), but with a 4WD or a 2WD with chains you should be fine. There isn't a walk up to the lifts at Mt Cheeseman - you can drive up and drop your kit off and then park a couple of hundred metres back down the road. Theres also pretty nice accommodation up at Mt Cheeseman so to get the most from the skiing experience here why not book yourself in to the full Cheeseman skiing experience!
