Mt Hutt is the closest commercial ski field to Christchurch and it has some great skiing. There are around 500 hectares of terrain at Mt Hutt and at 2086metres it has the height to have good snow most of the time. For the times when snow is scarce, Mount Hutt now has plenty of snow canons so getting skiing here is pretty much guaranteed between July and October.
As with many of the NZ ski resorts, Mount Hutt has invested in both snow making and lifts recently and the new six-seater chairlift running from the base to the top of the mountain makes a big difference in handling any Christchurch crowds.
There are good slopes for beginners and families, long groomers for the timid, and the steeps of the South Face for good riders.
Mt Hutt tends to have good parks and plenty of good riders using them and taking part in the regular freestyle competitions including the Methven Big Air.
Mt. Hutt is around an hour and a half drive from Christchurch and a 35-minute drive from Methven.
