Squaw valley, California, doesn't look all that impressive when you check out the trail map, but don't let this put you off; it hasn't got its legendary status for nothing. Its another resort in the High Sierra Mountains beside Lake Tahoe, but its far more fun than the nearby Heavenly Ski Area.

Despite the mountain being super steep, its actually got some pretty good beginner skiing. There are a few very very easy runs by the base of the ski hill which are ideal for first timers, but only when the snow is plentiful enough at resort level. There's another great little beginner section at the High Camp Area, and you needn't worry about having to ski the steeper terrain back to the village because you can simply ride the tram back down. For intermediates there are good runs throughout the resort and the standard of grooming is excellent.
Its really a resort for experts and there are more lines to ride here than you'll ever have time to complete. My personal favourite runs were those which cascade down from the “Headwall Express” lift which accesses this amazingly steep ridge line which holds steep and drop off galore terrain. The standard of skiing and snowboarding here is very high and there's a definite feeling of excitement about the resort. Expect a stampede for the lifts on a powder day!!

The terrain park facilities at Squaw Valley are definitely some of the best in the USA and the added bonus is that you can ride park until about 9 pm at night: there are even floodlights so you don't have to ski or board in the dark. The pipe at squaw is particularly long and
There is some good accommodation at the base of the ski lifts if you're willing to pay for it and the general vibe is friendly, if a little stuck up. Going out in this town, or in nearby Tahoe, is plenty of fun, but probably going to cost you quite a lot of money; especially if you end up in one the many casinos.

The transfer time is relatively short to squaw with the nearest airport at Reno, being only an hour away. This is a brilliant place for advanced skiers and snowboarders who like the steeps or enjoy park riding. There's also plenty to go at for beginners and intermediates as well so its really a good all round bet and definitely in the top 5 list of places to go. It's absolutely epic on a powder day!
