Overview
Argentina has nine main ski resorts but the four best known are probably, Cerro Catedral, Las Lenas, Cerro Chapelco and Cerro Castor. The best known internationally perhaps, and certainly the largest resort, is Las Lenas. Located in the well known wine region of Mendoza, it is a purpose built resort with around 40 runs. Further south is Chapelco which has a more traditional and family feel. The high Andes resorts in the Mendoza region are situated around the highest peak - Aconcagua. They receive good snow and light due to the altitude. These are considered 'top' resorts which is reflected in the price of services and accommodation.
The other key resort areas are Patagonia and the Lake District. Located in the Enchanted Valley is Cerro Catedral. It has a Swiss feel and stunning views over Lake Nahuel Huapi. This resort offers fantastic and unique off-piste and touring. Finally, Cerro Castor located in Tierra del Fuego is the southern most ski resort in the world. It is a smaller resort and has the lowest base level of all the Argentinian resorts, however has one of the longest seasons. It's cross country skiing and dog sledding makes up for less downhill action.
The ski season in Argentina generally runs from June to Sept with shorter seasons the further north you go in the country (the most northerly resort, Penitentas runs from around mid-June to late August). Winter temperatures average around 1 deg C and the Argentinian winters are generally dry and sunny.
The main way to get to Argentina's resort from abroad involves a flight to the capital's international airport in Buenos Aires. Bus connections from the airport to resorts or their nearby towns are suprisingly good but there is also the option for internal flights to a number of local airports. This will take up to 4 hours depending on where you are heading.
