Overview
Snow is not really that common in South Africa and therefore it's advisable not to specially book a ski holiday in the country, but rather to add in some skiing to a wildlife or sightseeing holiday. If you want to ski or board in South Africa then the best option is the Drakensberg Mountains which can have some snow and a limited season June to August.
Eastern Cape
South Africa's one dedicated ski resort, Tiffindell is on the Eastern Cape within the Drakensburg Mountains. The resort has a snow machine so between June and August you are almost guaranteed some snow. As with much in South Africa, the lifestyle is as important as the activities so the apres ski, while modest, is enthusiastic.
There are other places where you can ski in South Africa e.g. Sani Top in the Southern Drakensberg Mountains. However, most are not really formal areas so you have to really be keen and adventurous. If you are adventurous, have the money and are lucky with the snowfall, there is some truly unique, wild and unchartered heli-skiing to be had although the runs are generally not that long. The land-locked enclave of Lesotho (located entirely within South Africa) also offers some very limited club and resort skiing and boarding.
