Which HD Headcam - GoPro or Contour

Which HD Headcam - GoPro or Contour

Any advice on which HD headcam to go for?  Its mainly for ski footage (in the pow hopefully)... it looks like the GoPro is better in lots of respects, but I'm a bit worried about the weight - specially for hold it out on a pole while skiing and stuff.  What do folk reckon?

Re: Which HD Headcam - GoPro or Contour

Its a tricky one - the GoPro is definitely the bulkier, but the fact that it comes with a really good waterproof case and loads of mounts etc probably swings it.  You have to buy a seperate case for the contour which makes it more expensive - then you still don't have any mounts.  Only thing is that the GoPro does have a few negatives - like saving in mpeg which means you have to convert the files before you can edit them properly.  Plus the filesizes are massive (lots of Gigabytes)!  Haven't used the contour headcam much so would be good to hear what others think...?

Re: Which HD Headcam - GoPro or Contour

Just tried out the go pro chest harness today and giving it the thumbs up for comfort and ease of use- plus you don't look like a Belgian tourist as its out of the way. NOt all software editors need conversion either- power director takes the gopro files directly-

Re: Which HD Headcam - GoPro or Contour

Its super hard to beat the GoPro and don't think I'd go for anything else now.  Only thing is I know two other folk who've had trouble with the GoPro hero2 - sounds like they maybe rushed it out for christmas though no doubt its awsome once the teething problems are sorted.

Re: Which HD Headcam - GoPro or Contour

I know it's a late post here but just for info if anyone else has problems with the Hero 2 then update the firmware, it has a few bug fixes. I had a few issues with strange colouring and what seemed to be corrupted video files here and there but the firmware update has gotten rid of them and haven't had a single issue, great piece of kit.

Re: Which HD Headcam - GoPro or Contour

Thats interesting Scotty - I've just recently hit the issue of strange colouring etc.  I updated the firmware like you say and it all seems ok again now but its rocked my confidence a bit with it.  Annoyingly I had some awsome footage of skiing on Ben Nevis before Christmas on it which was all corrupted - had a hissy fit when I got home to look at it and realised!  Soon as it snows again we'll be going back to try to recapture the magic!  Also worth noting is that I had troubly applying the firmware upgrade - I tried to do it initially through GoPro's CineForm Studio but it wasn't applying the firmware patch properly at the end of the process.  In the end I managed to apply the upgrade by doing a sequence of button presses which I'd read worked for the GoPro Hero1.
