So...it's been mixed for the first week of the 2008/2009 season at Nevis Range weather-wise and today (Sat 24th) was no exception. Got up to the carpark early doors for the 9am lift. Lots of folk already there and queuing for tickets. Skipped straight to the gondola - three cheers for season passes!
Anyway, conditions? Well, there's been quite a bit of snow over the past few days but it is getting blown around the mountain. So you're getting some scoured patches and then some deep powder. The runs generally have good cover though with the old snow fences doing their job. I think the exception is out Far West (due to the southwesterlies). The runs are pretty good just after pisting and were softening nicely by lunchtime.

Looking to Warrens Saturday 24th Jan 2009
Reckon off-piste needs quite a bit more snow to fill in all the gaps and cover the rocks. You can find some if you go looking but it is super-variable.
The main issue today though was being able to see where you were going. Unfortunately the weather was pretty wild and stormy with gusty winds and poor vis. Flat light with high velocity spindrift....hmmm - nice! In the short clear spells however, if you happened to be at the top of a run the skiing was pretty good :o)

Because of the winds only Linnhe, the Trainer tow, Alpha and Goose T-Bar were open when I left (1pm). This gives ok access but did lead to some queues. Doubt the quad chair will have opened as stated on the Nevis Range website but I could be wrong.
Unfortunately it's forecast to be windier tomorrow but it should also still be snowing so if we can just get some calmer weather next week and I can skive work!

Posted Sun, 01/25/2009 - 14:47Wind kept the gondola shut till 10am but then Nevis Range opened this morning (Sun 25th). Lots more new snow and some really nice skiing under the quad chair. The Quad, Goose T-bar, Linnhe and Alpha were all open. The hill is filling in nicely and you can start to fill in the gaps between runs.... :o)

Posted Mon, 01/26/2009 - 15:54Hill looked cracking today. Had to just watch from the home office window though :o(
Sounds like conditions were really good on all the runs and much less windy - even the summit tow opened!! Hoping to get up again this week will post photos soon......
Re: Nevis Range Conditions Blog
Posted Wed, 01/28/2009 - 11:39Finally made it back up the hill after just looking out the window at it for 2 days! Unfortunately there has been a bit of rainfall on what was a good cover of snow, this set overnight and made for some hard and icy pistes first thing :o(
Where they have groomed and softened things up a bit though, the pistes were not bad. First thing this morning that mean't Sidewider was probably the nicest skiing. The quad chair opened and was groomed underneath as I left so reckon that would be ok, possibly the summit too if it opens. The goose and the lower runs like rabbit run and home run were pretty unpleasant.
Still, there is a decent cover of snow and the hill 'looks' great.

Re: Nevis Range Conditions Blog
Posted Sun, 02/01/2009 - 21:00Well, end of this week ended up being the skiers least favourite double whammy of wet and windy! A thaw Thurs / Fri left the hill looking upsettingly bare although all the pistes still have cover (if a little narrow and thinning at the bottom of the lower runs like alpha and quad chair).
Looking to the Goose and Quad Saturday 31st Jan 2009
There is still skiing to be had but the main problem this weekend was the wind. Saturday first thing made for an 'interesting' gondola ride. Hats off to the guys for getting things going. Just linnhe (for uplift) and alpha were running. Did the rabbit run a couple of times and the snow was actually really nice (compared to Thurs). Soft and groomed but it was limited so I decided to go and do something else with the afternoon.
On the Gondola - Nevis Range Saturday 31st Jan 2009
Sunday the wind scuppered everything and the hill was shut (although some brave ski patrollers and groomers got up first thing!). A drop in temperature though, so what snow there is will stay and that means Nevis Range has the makings of a cracking base layer so we just need some of this snow which is forecast. Fingers crossed it doesn't just fall on all the flat parts of the UK :o)

Posted Wed, 02/04/2009 - 09:11Wednesday morning, snow, Snow, SNOW....Yay! Thought I was just going to have to watch it snowing everywhere else on the TV. Hopefully get skiing this afternoon or Friday. Will update on conditions then.

Re: Nevis Range Conditions Blog
Posted Tue, 02/10/2009 - 20:36Finally made it back up the Range after all that snow. By all accounts it was a busy weekend which is great. The snow has suffered a little in places though with all that traffic but all the runs have a good cover and the main issue is it's pretty solid and packed in places cause of all those nice minus temperatures. Comes up really nicely after grooming (which is more than I can say for my skiing!) and there is a cracking base for the rest of the season. Just need lots more regular snow top ups and enthusiastic grooming. Best runs at the mo are probably the summit, spider, the goose gulley, cats alley and anything they've just groomed!! Bring on the snow..........
Re: Nevis Range Conditions Blog
Posted Thu, 02/12/2009 - 19:13Woke up to find it snowing again this morning!! Light stuff down at the house but reckon it will be better up the hill and just what is needed to plump-up that good firm base. Working today :o( but hopefully make it up Fri / Sat. Will post photos as soon as I can.
Snow has turned to west coast rain...........word at the base station today was that it was raining on the hill from about lunchtime. Optimistically I guess it might help to soften things up a bit. Looks like warmer temperatures and rain for the next few days. Bugger!
